Vote No Show! Day Drinking For Democracy! Sunday August 6th Woodlands Tavern

Please join myself, Marcy Mays, Quinn Fallon, Linda & Pat Dull along with The League Bowlers for “The Vote No Show” Sunday, August 6th at Woodlands Tavern. Yes, we will be day drinking for democracy! Doors at 3pm, show at 4pm. Admission is free though we do ask you to vote against Issue One to protect your freedom.

Wait. What? Why Are We Day Drinking For Democracy?

In a cynical move straight out of the C. Montgomery Burns playbook, on August 8th, Ohio lawmakers are asking Ohio citizens to pass a law that would permanently strip them of their voting rights. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s no secret that in recent years, Ohio has been suffering a debilitating “brain drain” of young college graduates migrating to greener pastures as our beloved Buckeye state has become the butt of morning show “stupid” jokes normally reserved for Florida. But are we really stupid enough to voluntarily cede our own power to big government bureaucrats for all eternity? I’m horrified to admit that maybe we are. Thusly, we must day drink to protest.

Not to bore everyone with a civics lesson, but if Issue One passes, Ohio would no longer have majority rule on statewide referendums. It would now take 60 percent of the folks voting Yes instead of 50.01 percent for an issue to pass.

I have a basic math question: How can 50.01% of voters pass a bill that requires future bills to reach a 60% threshold to be approved? And how did we arrive at 60? Why not 58.3%?  Is 60 just a nice round number us humans are so fond of? I still remember my 10th birthday cake better than my 9th or 11th so I get the attraction but as Monty Python might say in the holy grail “round numbers are no basis for a system of government.”

Also, I’ve noticed that the same career politicians pushing this bill aren’t requiring a 60% threshold to vote them back into office. Seems we have two sets of rules: One for the incumbent politicians and one for the people.

Or put another way…..

Burns, “I am so tired of these Joe Six Packs and Sally Housecoats voting to stop me from owning the sun. Who are they to say I cannot do whatever I want when I want?”

Smithers, “Unfortunately it’s called a democracy, sir. But perhaps we could hold a special election and convince them to vote away their own voting power. Then special interests and big government could do whatever they want  without voters objecting.”

Burns, “Um…..yes…..getting rid of democracy…..excellent.”

Vote No On Issue One and come down to Woodlands to help us to daydrink for democracy! - Colin
