Friday Bet$ For Realz - Super Bowl Edition

Turn that gambling podcast off. You don’t have to sift through all those cold takes. Pencilstorm has you covered with Friday Bet$ For Realz. Every Friday this fall we will be posting actual bets being made by Pencil Storm staffers and friends. Remember the best bet is to never bet at all.

On the other hand…winners play and players win. Let’s do this!

Big $ (Pencil Storm Browns Beat Writer with The North Coast Posse)

Well, we made it to the greatest American holiday: Super Bowl Sunday. This is what we’ve loaded these live bullets for to unload an avalanche of prop bet units to complement the buff dip and hot wings So without further adieu … my (lengthy) list…

49ers:

Kyle Juszcyck over 3.5 rec. yards (my personal fav)

Kittle over 47.5 rec. yards (im also taking a big flyer on GK to win mvp for no other reason than I love watching him play)

Deebo over 4.5 receptions

Chiefs:

Helaire over 6.5 rushing yards

Noah Gray (backup TE) over 11.5 rec yards (49ers main goal has to be to neutralize Mr. Swift)

Mahomes under 261.5 yards

Kelce under 71.5 rec yards

Pacheco under 66.5 rushing yards

also, tails never fails

As for the game overall, you can probably tell, Im on the 49ers. Viva Las Vegas, Enjoy the day, Good Luck fade or tail

So this concludes my first full football season with legalized sports gambling in Ohio. I have learned two things: 1) I am a very bad gambler. 2) I need to focus on bets that enhance my game watching experience. There is always value in having a chance right to the end.

So with that thought in mind and my free Bet 365 bonus money still burning a hole in my pocket, I have been listening with interest to experts on podcasts and experts at the coffee shop trying to figure out the right play. I know this, people are all over the map on this one.

My dumb ass parlay is as follows:

Brock Purdy over .5 int

Chiefs over 1.5 FG

2nd Half under 20.5 points.

It pays +600

Things are feeling pretty dismal in these parts after the Lions lost the NFC Championship game in a very-Lions way by shitting the bed in the third quarter and blowing a commanding lead and dominating first half performance. Our normal Super Bowl viewing attendees are boycotting the game (because the Lions lost) and the league (because the Lions lost) so it’s going to be a bit lower key than usual.

My take? Glad you asked. If you’d said in September “Jer, the Lions have a great regular season and make it to the NFC Championship then blow it in the second half. How does that sound?” I’d ask – “where do I sign???” Yeah, the loss stung a bit, but rationally, I think they over-achieved. One playoff win was my hope. They got two. You don’t go from terrible to the Super Bowl in a year or two. Now they’ve been here. Expectation is to build on it. I am ok with it all. Even the risky, blown fourth-down attempts.

Back to the big game. While I don’t care about either team at all, I’ve still got that Super Bowl pre-buzz and I’ll be firing up the gambling apps in a major way. As I’ve said before, the Chiefs are my gambling nemesis. I NEVER win when they play. Whether I bet for or against them, spreads, money lines, over/unders, props… doesn’t matter. I may as well throw my cash in the wood-hopper of my smoker to add a little extra flavor to the two racks of baby-backs I’ll have going.  But alas, here we are. Let’s make it interesting.

Chiefs +2 for sure. People have been writing off this team since they lost to the Lions in week 1. They’re built for this game. They’ll probably win.

I’m not touching the over/under. 47 is too difficult.

Mahomes passing TDs over 1.5 feels safe.

I know they say Tails Never Fails, but I take heads, every time, always.  On Draft Kings you can get a straight +100 while it’s -105 on MGM.

And a couple props - “What Will Be Higher - Gross Yards of the 1st Punt or Yards of the Longest Touchdown Scored?”  - I’ll take Longest Touchdown Scored on this one at +155.

I’ll take the over (5) on how many times they show Taylor Swift during the game. I’d probably take that for the first half alone. As an aside, people need to focus their rage on the puke-inducing, lip-sync garbage halftime shows they’ve been shoving down our throats for years and stop complaining about her.

I agree wholeheartedly with my brother in the rock & roll Jeremy on the Taylor Swift topic. It’s TOTALLY the old men at NFL headquarters using a pop superstar to desperately try to get young people to watch their (let’s face facts, increasingly boring through the years) telecasts. And what is it about independent (not to mention wealthy) young women that irks Republicans so badly? (The Handmaids Tale, anyone?)

Anyway, GO CHIEFS!

I think this is finally going to be Mike Shanahan’s son’s year. Four years ago, the 49ers were up 20-10 in Super Bowl LIV with under seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. They could not close and Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid won their first ever Super Bowl. Since that time, the Niners have continued building a strong team in Kyle Shanahan’s vision and they’re much better now, starting with the guy I think will win MVP. Christian McCaffrey +450 - I think McCaffrey is going to be unleashed and is primed to go off in the biggest game of his dynamic career. Multiple TD’s and big plays. Chris Jones & Nick Bosa to both get +0.5 Sacks each +340 - Bosa had 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 QB hit, and 1 forced fumble in that last Super Bowl in just his second year in the league. Folks, he’s a lot better now. Jones has been known to step up in big games and he should get to Lee Harvey Purdy at least once this contest.
